Flat Panel versus Heat Pipe

Both types have its pros and cons.

Flat Panel systems applying the thermosyphon principle are very robust and almost maintenance free because there are no moving parts, no electronics, no pumps. This makes it a very long la st ing, failure-free system. It is "low-tech", but st ill of a very high efficiency, reaching water temperatures of 60°C to 90°C. Also on cloudy days the system st ill generates warm water. It's perfect for small and large systems, for home use or in the hospital ity business.

The Heat Pipe system is a sophist icated "high-tech" system which reaches higher maximum temperatures. Temperatures above 100°C are possible. The main advantage is the better eff iciency during rainy and cloudy weather, as the selectively coated Heat Pipes still absorb IR-rays from diffuse l ight.The disadvantage is the high content of technology like the temperature sensors, circulat ion pumps and PLC controllers which are possible sources of failures in the run of the years. Heat pipe systems are perfect for large homes or in the hospital ity business.

Thermosyphon versus Forced Circulation

Both Flat panel systems (pressurized or non-pressure) are usually operat ing in the thermosyphon principle. For that it is important that the hot water storage tank is always located above the flat panels. At pressurized systems the tank is usually hidden inside the roof at the highest locat ion, while at non-pressure systems the tank is outside on the roof, just above the flat panels.

Only in cases where it is required that the hot water storage tank and the flat panels are installed far away from each other or at d ifferent levels, a forced circulation by a PLC controlled circulat ion pump is necessary.

For Heat Pipe systems a forced circulation by a PLC controlled circulation pump is always required.

Pressurized versus Non-pressure

While Flat Panel systems are available as pressurized systems and as non-pressure systems, the Heat Pipe systems are always pressurized systems.

In a pressurized system the hot water storage tank is d irectly connected to the cold water supply. For that reason the cold and hot water pressure is always the same. There is no add it ional hot water pump needed.

In a non-pressure system, the pressure at the hot water outlet depends on the gravitat ion, the mean the height between the hot water tank and the hot water outlet. If for example the hot water storage tank is located on the roof 5 meter above the shower outlet, the pressure at the shower outlet will 0.5 bars, which is just enough to take a pleasant shower. If the d istance is lower, or the solar system is installed at ground level (l ike in the garden), then an additional small automatic pressure pump is required.

Pool Heating Panels

The OKU pool heat ing panels are a type of flat panels. Made from high molecular polyethylene the absorbers are resistant against chemicals like chloride and salt used in common pools.

The climate in northern Thailand is very pleasant during the winter season. But outdoor swimming pools are quite uncomfortable during the cold season, if not heated. An indoor pool has to be heated all the year round, even in the hot season.

Heat ing of swimming pools is an ideal appl icat ion for solar energy. No very high temperatures are needed, but large quant it ies of water have to be heated, so it makes sense to operate such an installat ion with a large flow rate at a relat ively low temperature level.
